Help in acquiring greater knowledge of the Bible

Reviewed by Leslie Granier for Reader Views (2/09) "Bible Trivia Challenge" is comprised of 2,001 trivia questions which cover every book of both the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are ten questions per quiz. The majority of the questions are true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank, although there are also several open-ended questions designed to check the reader's overall comprehension of the material. Answers are included in the back of the book along with which book, chapter and verse the information appears. The authors note that the questions are based on the King James Version but those who use more modern translations of the Bible should not have any difficulty with the wording. This book is geared toward several different audiences. People who want to explore more deeply what is contained in the Bible can use these questions as a guide to highlight the more important concepts. This book could be useful for those who like to participate in trivia competitions, including game shows. They could acquire vast amounts of knowledge quickly. A third group who will enjoy this book includes people like me who love to take quizzes for fun just to see how much we do (or do not) know. Finally, parents or teachers could use the material to test a child's reading comprehension abilities and determine with which skills he or she may need assistance. I like the way the book is formatted, with each quiz concentrating on material from one specific book of the Bible. The quizzes seem to follow the same order as the Bible, but some books have several quizzes associated with them. Therefore, I think it would be helpful to list which book each quiz is based upon at the top of the page so it will be easier for the reader to search for the answer in the Bible if he or she chooses. Attending mass every week provides worshipers with many of the Church's teachings, but many of the books in the Bible are never featured. I plan to utilize the "Bible Trivia Challenge" by Conover Swofford and John Hudson Tiner to help me acquire a greater knowledge of the contents of the Bible. By reading each book and evaluating what I have learned, I hope to gain a more in-depth comprehension of my religion.

Thought Not Devoutly Religious...

...I found the book interesting. Yes, some questions are really trivial but there are many others that you think, "Wow! I should know that one!" It was purchased as a gift so I only browsed through it for 10-20 minutes (to do so any longer might have turned it into a "used" give *grin*). The only improvement I would suggest for any of these books might to be a bigger typeface for the more older readers. Of course, that magnifying glass we bought our nanny some time back will come in handly.
