Four and a half stars

Beautiful images throughout this book. Good information, but more of a fine art "look at" book than an actual manual to work and learn from. All in all - a nice book to won.

Usefull if you like decadence style

Some nice decadence images and techniques.

a well guided tour through printing techniques

You will learn about the basics and much more. Illustrations in this book are well printed and will make you feel what the authors are writing about. The reader is guided through how to produce a printable B & W negative, how to make a high quality B & W print, how to use liquid photographic emulsions and how to tone and split tone your prints. Furthermore, so-called alternative printing processes and the latest forms of them are introduced in a way easy to understand. Mike Ware's new Kallitype process (argyrotype) and his new cyanotype process are introduced to your benefit. There is a fascinating chapter about contact printing with printing out papers including an introduction to using modern B & W papers as printing out papers even if they were not made for such purpose. Lith Printing is explained duly to allow your entre. The three things that I really liked are the following: 1) two-bath development was explained thoroughly and clearly, 2) the usage of several toners (i.e. split toning) was described clearly, and 3) the illustrations were chosen and printed so well that subjects such as contrast change and tone variations became visible experiences supporting the text (Wittgenstein has said:"Some things cannot be explained; they have to be shown"). - There is a book which came to mind when I read "Beyond Monocrome". The book is Randall Webb's and Martin Reed's "Spirits of Salts, a working guide to old photographic processes" by Argentum ISBN 1-902538-05-6. Spirits of Saults complements Beyond Monochrome well when you want to get into alternative processes. If you first read Beyond Monochrome, it will allow you to dive deeper and deeper in the alternative processes by continuing with Spirits of Salts. - Both Tony Worobiec and Ray Spence have experience as teachers. Their expression is clear and they have an ability to focus on the important. - A splendid book that will carry you far.
