Weapon of Love

Growing up African-American, "Johnny" Johnson felt the full impact of racial prejudice. His father, however, refused to hate back when abused. "Johnny" learned early on,to always look for the best in others until a neighborhood gang forced him to join. Living by the law of hate and violence, he was about to be handcuffed by an African-American policeman. Fortunately, a white Salvation Army Scout master saw what was happening in time to intervene in "Johnny's" behalf. Once again he learned to live by his father's high ideals. Later, after getting a college education,he struggled against racial prejudice in the Marines. At first, they tried to discourage him from joining by telling him that there was no future for him, no promotions, but he persisted. His goals made people roll their eyes, especially when he announced that he planned to become a U.S. senator by 1974. His other passions: fight against discrimination and share Jesus Christ with everyone he met consumed his thoughts. Always giving any assignment his very best, he succeeded in breaking down the barriers between the races and winning the respect of his superiors. Eventually, by taking many classes, he became a lawyer in the military. "Johnny" determined to always use the weapon of love in every situation. As a result, he finally received the promotions he longed for. Eventually, he worked his way into government circles, becoming friends with two presidents and high-ranking officials. Charles Colson wrote the Introduction to "Johnny's" autobiography. This book, BEYOND DEFEAT, is a fast, moving, gripping narrative, a repeat read, and full of evidence that love wins over hate. While Dr. Johnson's theology. . .

. . .is definitely different in many ways than my own, this book is worthy of exploration by Christians from all sorts of backgrounds. In this heartwarming autobiography, Dr. Johnson relates his triumph over childhood poverty, racial injustice, and intolerance, while rising to the rank of Warrent Officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving on Gov. Reagan's cabinet in California, and eventually serving high-ranking positions within the Nixon administration. Along the way, are touching portraits of the love he held (and holds) for Jesus and for his family.A wonderful story demonstrating how love can overcome hate even in the face of discrimination and personal tragedy.
