Unlike the newer series, if you dropped this book on a cockroach, it would have at least some chance of survival, coming it at under the 200 page mark. There is a short overview of the state of the scene at the time, and a list of honorable mentions that is only a bit over 2 pages long, compared to the recent 16. This is the first volume of a Year's Best series that Dozois edited, taking over from Lester Del Rey. On picking stuff: "My taste is my own, and I have no doubt that I have selected quite a different collection of stories than Lester would have had he compiled this year's anthology; indeed, I have no doubt that every SF writer or reader alive would if asked, come up with his own list of the year's best SF, and that not one of these lists would agree to any significant degree. In this respect, the title "Best Science Fiction Stories of the Year" is a misnomer. Taste and subjectivism are always implied (and, I hope, understood) in the title of a series such as this; such anthologies should really be called "Garnder Dozois Picks the Stories He Liked Best This sYear" or "Terry Carr Really Enjoyed These Stories," or some such. But such quibbling, hair-splitting titles sell no books, unforunately, and so on we march under the banner "Best Science Fiction Stories of the Year."" He mentions the lack of space only letting him fit in one novella, the Bishop, which apparently has Hugo and Nebula nominations, leaving out, among others, Tiptree's "Houston, Houston Do You Read".
