Teaches understanding and compassion

This is a sensitive and accurate portrayal of the toll poverty takes on children and families. It's a great resource to teach children from the middle to upper classes what life is like in other segments of society. Recommended for parents, teachers, and libraries!

Wonderful book to use in a classroom

I am a third grade classroom teacher and I use this book every year. I teach at a parochial school and every year we have fund raisers for various charities. We also discuss various social issues. This book is a wonderful piece of literature to explain what it means to be poor to children. I just bought my own copy so I have it always available.

This is an entertaining, yet sad children's story.

I read the book "Being Poor" every day during one of my elementary school years. I cannot remember which one, though, but I must have been very young. I am not sure why I was so drawn to it but perhaps it was because myself or my family had been called "poor" at times and I wanted to make sure that we weren't. The story about that impoverished family made me realize how lucky I was to have the things that I did even at that young age.
