What is it like to be a professional basketball player in the WNBA? Glorious victories, adoring fans, and celebrity endorsements go hand-in-hand with grueling training camps, continuous traveling, and a 24-hour-a-day commitment to upholding the ideals of the WNBA. But perhaps the most striking aspect of being a woman pro, readers will find, is the awareness of being part of something special, and living this commitment out of sincere appreciation and desire, not because it's required. Through the pre-season, the season itself, and the off-season, readers follow the players as they practice, train, travel, go to school, pursue other careers, take care of families, interact with fans, and participate in a host of other activities.
As a children's librarian I find it hard to come across inspiring nonfiction for young women. I think I found a winner here with this book! The text is clear and easy for younger readers and extensive enough to captivate older readers as well. Many aspects of women's basketball are covered in this 47 page book including what it is like to be a professional ball player, the responsibilty the players feel towards their female fans, how they fit in a career and family, the off-season lives of the players, and also good sports-womanship. I recommend this book for any collection that is serious about making young women feel confident about their goals and dreams. In other words...this book is good for all collections!
