Bambi Grows Up

This is a nice little book that contains many of the elements of the classic Disney 'Bambi' story with one omission - the hunters do not kill Bambi's mother. (Thank goodness. Who wants to read that to small children--lol.) The book progresses through the story of Bambi's life by using the seasons as the connection element. Thus, it begins with Spring and Thumper running to tell Owl and the rest of the critter friends that the young prince has been born. They all then rush over to see the little fawn who hasn't yet even gotten either a name, nor his legs beneath him. Summer arrives next and we find Bambi stronger and very curious about his world. He asks questions about things such as what names of various creatures and plants are. This is also the time when he meets Flower the skunk and Faline, his female counterpart. The seasons change again, and like children, Bambi is now more competent. He and his mother see the Great Prince of the Forest who is Bambi's father. Because it is Fall, Bambi is also introduced to hunters, although they only frighten the deer. Bambi and Thumper have fun in the winter snow and on the frozen pond, and then Spring comes again. Flower and Mrs. Quail are shown with their new families. Bambi has antlers now and he is shown vying for Faline's attention with Ronno -- a rival male deer. Furious that Ronno is in HIS forest, Bambi charges, strikes Runno with his hooves and pushes him into the pond. The story ends with the Great Prince proudly watching over his son, as Bambi and Faline move into a grassy clearing. Unlike so many other Disney books this one has a great deal to discuss. Not only is there a story, but you can talk about the seasons, and how springtime brings not only new life to the trees but to the lives of the little animals. Four Stars. Good Read-aloud. Good artwork. A solid story told in a manner that young children can understand. The book provides a setting in which to discuss seasonal changes, etc.

This book teaches about animals and the seasons in the woods. It is a good book for 3 to 5 year olds with many colorful pictures in it. The lesson the book teaches is to be nice to animals and that the animals in the woods are scared of the woods. This book is good for children because of the pictures and the moral of the story.
