Title says it

Title says it: if you're a total beginner and you want to learn to knit by actually knitting something useful, this book is there for you. If you're a more advanced knitter, you won't like it that much - but then, if you're advanced, you won't buy a book for beginners and so you can't complain. And that's why I rate this book 5/5. (If you want a book for pre-intermediate level, get "Simply Baby" Simply Baby: 20 Special Handknits for Baby's First Two Years by the same author.) This book combines a knitting step-by-step handbook and a pattern book. The first patterns are extremely easy - and I DO mean "extremely" - something for the beginners to start with and to make them believe in themselves. Some more complicated patterns are then introduced, taking the beginner to higher levels (again: consider buying "Simply Baby" as well). Although this book may be useful for other people as well, I absolutely recommend it to those of you who have just learned you're pregnant and want to do something for your baby. Having knitted some of the projects, you will be able to start knitting some more difficult ones. Good luck!

Terrific designs for beginners

I hadn't knitted in over 20 years and now that I'm expecting, I saw a Debbie Bliss pattern in the UK parenting magazine "Junior" and thought the sweater was so cute that I'd give it a try. I bought some Rowan yarn from a local shop and started knitting. (You can use other yarns, but you need to make a tension square as she instructs you to in the beginning.) The sweater turned out so cute that I bought this book, in spite of the warnings that her patterns are hard to read, and I have already made the hat and booties and have ordered some of her yarn for the blanket and another sweater. The patterns are easy to follow if you read them carefully. She does include dimensions for the various sizes and I will note that her latest book 'cashmerino 2' also includes diagrams which are helpful. The layout and photography are also elegant and beautifully done.

Great for Beginners

After knitting for only a few months, I wanted to try a sweater. I picked up this book and was pleased to see lovely designs that weren't going to overwhelm me. I was able to complete a simple sweater for my baby in just a few days. I found the instructions easy to understand and the patterns lovely. I'll be buying more Debbie Bliss books!

Fantastic teaching for beginners.

I bought this book as one of several in my quest to teach myself to knit. Just looking at the pictures of the projects and their beautiful, simple colors has been very motivating. The projects progress in difficulty level (although all are easy) throughout the book. Each project has taught me a new skill with confidence. The instructions and illustrations are very clear and starting each new project is not intimidating. I love the yarns, which if used for an adult project might be a little pricey, but with smaller items it's fun to use "luxury" yarn. I would definitely recommend this book for a beginner like myself, particularly if you are using books to teach yourself.

terrific!!

This is one of the best simple baby books I have ever purchased! The patterns are cute and easy. Many call for her yarns, but you only need two to three balls for many of the patterns. I love her cashmerino and making a baby sweater was the perfect way to use this yummy yarn and not break my bank. I recommend it for busy moms and new knitters. The patterns are simple and straight forward with minimal shaping and no color work. The sweaters are also baby friendly with necks that open at the shoulder or boat necks that overlap at the shoulder. I definately recommend this book!!
