Avatar: The Last Airbender – Aang’s Unfreezing Day (Team Avatar Hides a Secret from Aang)
Published by C.M. Bishop , 1 month ago
“Aang’s Unfreezing Day” begins when Aang wakes up and is berated by a collage of notes from Sokka, ordering him not to leave the house. Aang ignores them and finds Toph pushing a cart with some goodies through town. Aang sneaks a peek at the cart and asks questions. During their conversation, Toph realizes she said too much. Toph earthbends a wall around the secret items and pushes Aang away. Toph’s commentary is always hysterical, especially when she mutters her plan to chain Aang down to the bed.
After Toph pushes Aang away, Aang glides to Katara, waterbending into barrels. His interruption causes Katara to drop the water on Aang and Katara’s heads. Aang dries them by airbending. Aang asks if she needs help waterbending, but Katara claims she’s performing a Water Tribe tradition. Everyone keeps beating around the bush about their true intentions. Aang believes it’s because Katara can’t trust Aang to keep a secret. He proves he can’t when he exposes Toph’s secret of using Katara’s toothbrush to clean between her toes.
After Aang’s defeated conversation with Katara, he heads into town. Aang spots the Jasmine Dragon and thinks Zuko and Iroh will illuminate the situation. Aang enters the Jasmine Dragon to find Zuko decorating a table. Zuko rushes to the door and shoos Aang outside. During their conversation, Zuko lies about his Uncle Iroh giving tours of the tea shop before he locks Aang out. (If anything, this short story shows how Team Avatar can’t lie to save their lives.)
Aang gripes until he encounters Sokka during his grocery shopping spree. Sokka argues that Aang was supposed to stay inside the house. Aang wonders why and mentions all of his weird incidents with his friends. Sokka has an answer for everything—well, almost everything. Sokka escapes with a cheap distraction when the conversation gets too heated.
Aang feels down in the dumps about his friends distancing themselves from him. Momo screeches at Aang, and Mr. Cabbage Man (AKA the Cabbage Merchant) doesn’t require Aang’s assistance when he destroys the sacred cabbage cart. Aang is hanging out on a roof in front of the Jasmine Dragon when he concludes that everyone must be mad at him.
Meanwhile, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Toph, Iroh, Appa, and Momo sneak supplies into the Jasmine Dragon. Appa resists Zuko’s attempts at “peacefully” asking him to enter the Jasmine Dragon. Team Avatar struggles to shove Appa inside, but it doesn’t work. Iroh tempts Appa with some tea. While Katara leads Appa inside, Iroh speaks with Aang about his worries. In the background, you can see Team Avatar’s mishaps. Iroh’s expression about the fire and something being broken inside the Jasmine Dragon is hilarious. Iroh offers Aang a cup of tea from his shop. Aang voices his concerns about Zuko’s anger for his previous attempt at entering the tea shop. It’s hysterical how Sokka and Iroh state the unknown reasons for Zuko’s fury.
When they enter the Jasmine Dragon, the room is pitch black. Aang flinches as Zuko firebends to light the room. Aang was worried Zuko was aiming his fire at him. Katara, Zuko, Sokka, Toph, Iroh, Appa, and Momo all wish Aang a Happy Unfreezing Day. The room is decorated with ice sculptures of Aang and Appa, a portrait of Aang doing his marble airbending trick, streamers, and food. Everyone is in a partying mood. Katara and Sokka explain that it’s been a year since they broke Aang out of the iceberg. After Momo steals the bucket of tea from Appa, Zuko and Katara work together to keep Appa’s five stomachs happy.
The time to blow out the candles ends in disaster. Aang uses so much force that he blows the cake on Zuko’s face. Momo is more than accommodating in licking the frosting off his cheeks. Sokka and Toph’s humor is much appreciated throughout the narrative. Katara and Sokka argue whether the ice sculptures should be melted by Zuko’s firebending. Zuko wants to stay out of their argument. Toph explains how they divided the workload to prepare for Aang’s party and emphasiz
