Arlen's Complete Electric Guitar is a good learning tool.

Arlen has a long line of publications designed to help you learn to play (or play better) guitar that date back over 25 years. Like all that I have seen, this one is very practical as opposed to the formal "I just graduated from Berkley and I'm here to prove it," style of a step by step, page by page, manual. Arlen teaches me in a way that I can use right away. There are licks, improvisations, scales that work well in rock and blues, and I can jump around the book as I like and still benefit. Also, the short licks have helped me to develop my "ear." Admittedly, I am a hugh fan of Arlen and his publications, and I have seen him play many times. If you are someone who appreciates outstanding and versatile guitar work, and you can find one of his live shows, go to it.
