I found this book on google.books.com and started reading it there as it seemed to give a good overview of factor analysis. The first chapter, explaining the "philosophy" of the method, and the beginning of the second chapter that brought back more statistics knowledge than I thought I had (thanks to the crisp style the author uses), were enough to convince me to buy the book. I am convinced it will be more than a dry statistics reference book to keep on my shelf. And being a political scientist, I welcome the fact that the "applied" concerns this discipline, in which statistics is common but sometimes cookie-cutter, thus underscoring the benefit of owning such a fresh take on quantitative methods. It's a shame to volume is long out of print and only used copies are available.
