Spotlight: "For Any Girl..."; Me: "For Any One..."

I'm a guy, 29 years old, who has just read Anne of Green Gables for the first time (at the behest of my fiancee). It is a wonderful book. You do not have to be a young female to enjoy the adventures of one. Anne Shirley is a delight of a character. She's brave and intelligent and so very earnest. It is a treat to read about her coming to live at Green Gables and the relationships she develops there. There's real depth in some of the characters, especially Anne's guardian, Marilla, who remembers, if only faintly, what it was like to be young and passionate, and is drawn irresistably to that in Anne and rejuvenated by it. This and Tom Sawyer are the two great works about childhood in my experience. Yes--children would love to read, or be read, either of them. However, adults can get much out of reading them, too, and things that will not be available to the younger set. These books are both about children from an adult's perspective (neither Twain nor Montgomery were 9) and so an adult's perspective can assist in a reading of them, too. And, finally, while I'm certain that women are able to relate to being a girl on a different level than men can, we're all able to relate to the main virtues of an Anne Shirley and the beauty of childhood that she embodies. Unlike the title of the current Spotlight Review, this is not just for any girl, but for any*one* with a scope of imagination.

The best book in the world!

I totally LOVE this book! This is one of my favorite books in the whole world by my absolute FAVORITE author, L.M. Montgomery. Anne Shirley, the delightful, talkative orphan that Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert adopt, is an extraordinary character. She's so full of life that you just can't help loving her. L.M. Montgomery paints a wonderful picture of the small town of Avonlea, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where the story is set. As Anne gets older and more mature, she also gets wiser and more loving - and lovable. I've read this book at least three times, and it is still one of my absolute favorites. Even though this is classified as a "children's book," adults will love it too, I know. I read it first when I was 9 or 10 years old, then again when I was about 12, and again, just recently (I'm only 14 now). I also think that it would be a wonderful book for moms and dads to read to their children, no matter how old or young they were.

Great! I love it!

I think that "Anne of Green Gables" is a great story. Heart warming and sweet. I think it is even better if you have some sort of connection to Anne, like I do. I played her in a local production of the play "Anne of Green Ggables", and I have tons in common with her. I would recomed this book to anyone.

The most inspiring book I ever read.

I have read Anne of Green Gables a thousand times. Anne presents young girls with a worthy role model. She's hearty, imaginative, dedicated to family, friends and school. Montgomerey takes the time to bring all those around Anne into vivid life. I always wished that I could be just like Anne and come through all of my troubles with her spirit and imagination. I highly recommend reading the rest of the series, especially the last, Rilla of Ingleside.

A great novel about the affects of a high-spirited girl.

We have all read books that have touched us in some way. You can really relate yourself to the book and understand what is happening to the characters. L.M. Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables is a book the touched me. The novel begins when Anne Shirley, a talkative redhead is eleven years old. She is an orphan living with a family who has decided to send her back to the orphanage. Not long after Anne had arrived at the orphanage was she told that they had found another place for her to live. Anne would live with the Cuthberts on their farm. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are a brother and sister who own a farm called Green Gables on Prince Edward Island. They were both getting older and Matthew needed some help on the farm. They talked to a woman in town and she was going to help them adopt a strong young man to help them. Mistakenly Anne was sent to them. Before they had a chance to send her back, she had won not only their hearts but those of everyone else on Prince Edward Island. Anne's presence at Green Gables affected everyone. She went from being a jaunty little girl to a well loved young woman helping others along the way. Anne made friends with as many people as she could and did her best to assist others in any way possible. Anne of Green Gables was an amazing book that taught me many lessons about friendship and kindness. I am very glad that I was able to read it and hope that many others will do the same.
