Meh

This was an okay read, but I was expecting so much more. It was high up on a list of great horror reads from current day authors. It also had high ratings on goodreads, so I guess my expectations were too high. It's almost too much of a horror book, which sounds odd, but all of the maiming and torturing got old after a while. I found myself becoming numb to it all, and there just wasn't enough of a plot to make it all worthwhile. I mean, how many ways can crazy ghost nuns kill you in order to cause the most pain? While I don't believe that books should have entirely likable characters, I do want to care what happens to them at least a little, and I just never got there with anyone in the story. Correction, there was ONE character I hoped got out alive, but eveyone else? Meh. I was going to rate Angel Manor three stars at first, but the more I thought about it, and the more I read other books within the same genre with their own haunted houses, I just couldn't push myself to rate it higher than two stars. There are so many other great books within the genre out there (Kill Creek by Scott Thomas and The Siren and the Specter by Jonathan Janz being two I've enjoyed just recently). While Angel Manor wasn't an entirely awful experience, it's probably not something I'd really want to relive either. Though there were some greatly written, dark scenes to be had here, they were buried too deep in all of the other scenes. Hm...maybe if it were cut down to novella length I might have enjoyed it more. *shrugs* maybe.
