An English family, with an idealistic father at the head, a neurotic mother at the fringe, and a rebellious daughter, who requires the aid of a young Irish widow, leave England for the "New World" of New Zealand. Along the journey, and after their arrival, the character flaws, and the past, come more and more to light. This was the first novel I read by Dorothy Eden, and it won't be the last. The character development is second to none. The setting, mood and story line are equally superb. Few books unravel characters and a story as this one does; revealing too much of the plot would spoil the experience, but it is a great read.
