America's Promise: A Concise History of the United States

I use this textbook for my U.S. History survey courses. It is short, readable and without all those expensive extras that many publishers force on students. A great many students have difficulty with the larger, more elaborate texts and can't seem to figure out what weight in importance to give different topics. I was 3/4 through a different textbook when I realized that for all its pictures and documents, etc. it neglected to mention the Monroe Doctrine. Ridiculous!I wanted a textbook that gave adequate, but not extensive, coverage. At least I know when I assign a chapter my students will read it and understand.They also don't complain when I give them additional readings online, because they aren't spending three hours reading one chapter in a textbook. It's then up to me to put the "flesh on the bones" so to speak, in the classroom. America's Promise is ideal for my teaching style. In addition, it is a great price.
