Twelve-year-old James Gregg and his friend Cady Walker survived the first leg of their families' journey west, after braving the wild rapids and encounters with Indians. But when James's father falls ill, the wagon train leaves both families behind to fend for themselves on the plains. James and his older brother, Jeremy, must protect everyone. But the two boys have been feuding since the trip began-and they continue to fight even as their food and water supply dwindles. Then Cady spots outlaws heading toward their unguarded wagons. She acts as a lookout while James and Jeremy ready their rifles. Can the brothers unite long enough to stop their deadly enemies?
This is the secong in a trio of three. Bill has a very vivid description of the troubles that James and his fellow pioneer friend, Cady Walker go through. They are abandoned by the rest of the train for two weeks, to travel across the dusty plains solo. Then a gang of desperadoes threaten to hurt the two familes, and James and his feuding brother, Jeremy, must reunite to save them all. It is very exciting and just as good as it's others. The next book is more. . . romantic, but this is the start of it. I have had it since it first came out when I was 8, and I am still reading it over and over. I suggest it highly!

Jammes Gregg and his friend, Cady Walker, and her dying brother are left behind, with a trail that is very harsh. But they make all right and James and they end up as like, in love or something. They kiss in the next book, which is really disgusting. And Scott dies, and I cried at that part. Anyway, it's really good and besides the next one, it's my favorite. I like the romance part. Bill Gutman is great!!
awsome
