She brings this time and the characters involved to life so that you feel like you are experiencing it with them. The dialogue in the Irish brogue takes a little getting used to but then adds so much to the experience. Written in the 1930s I found myself reaching for the dictonary for many of her adjectives - one I still cannot find much on - trigrinizing? - as an expat Australian born in New South Wales this was a wonderful read. I finished high school in Sydney but never encountered this author - I think perhaps she was considered a little to "worldly" for the nuns to include in the curriculum! The author has a reputation as one of the greats of Australian literature. There is a Miles Franklin award given to this day for outstanding work by an Australian author.
