The year is 1919 and, like the rest of St. John's, eight-year-old Ralph is caught up in the excitement and adventure of the latest attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air. Alcock and Brown, two British flyers, are preparing for the flight in the field next to Ralph's home, and, although no one has yet been successful, they are confident that they will win the coveted London Daily Mail prize of ?10,000.
