After an accidental nuclear explosion off the coast of California, Philip searches for his family through a heavily militarized and devastated Los Angeles.
I read this book in 5th or 6th grade. I'm turning 30 this year and the themes and elements of this book have stuck with me over the years. Back in '89 it seemed like "the bomb" was inevitable and this book did expressed the horrors of nuclear holocaust, and the personal cost better than any other book, movie or TV show that I was exposed to as an 11-year old. I'm happy to see this book is still being read by young people today.
Powerful

I am in seventh grade and reading this book right now. It has to be the most powerful and emotional book I have ever read. As the premise becomes more relevant in today's world, I am scared reading it, even though I am not growing up in the Cold War.
A great book teen

After the Bomb is one of the best books I have ever read. After the Bomb is about a kid named Philip. His brother (Matt) dates the girl that he likes (Cara). Philip is sitting in his fort which is also a bomb shelter. When Cara and Matt walk in. They start talking and then it happens. The bomb goes of. Matt goes to see if his mother is alwright. They find her but she is badly burnt. Philip goes out when Matt, and he gets his mom to the hospital. Philip is devistated to see all of the dead and and badly burned victims of this catastrophe. He finds a nurse who tells him to go look for water. He helps the hospital and now is trying to get his mom helped with her burns. At the end I wanted more. I recomend this book to everybody.

I first read this book when I was 7th grade, that was 7 years ago. That has got to be one of the best books I have ever read in my life. I'm now 18 and to this day I still remember reading that book and it's sequel. The book is about a boy who get's stuck in the basement/bomb shelter and is there when a nuclear bomb is accidently fired at california (where he live's), and after the explosion he goes off to find his family. I think it's the kind of book a kid should read at that age, it show's bravery, and courage, and how beliving in yourself can get you far.
After the Bomb: Week One is a great action packed story.

This book is one of the many books that should get more attention than they really get. It is a great book, and I love how the author keeps the story going with plot twists and a surprise ending. After every chapter it makes you want to read it even more. You'll get so envolved in this book that it will seem like your in another world!
