Changed my perception of the world

I was probably too young when I first went to go see this woman read her poetry in Chicago; 16 or seventeen. Probably had never been kissed and listening to poetry about giving head and skateboarding. I probably didn't understand a word of it, but it blew my mind! I bought her book and read it to friends in her same halting, pitching style. This woman is a genius. She will always be an inspiration to me. My heart will always leap up when I see her name.

Lush and funny

This book is one of my favorites ever. It is funny and lyrical and although LA Loca grew up in an entirely different atmosphere, she speaks to me as well. Failed relationships, fights with your mom, great (quickly over) relationships, very mundane everyday things, made tragedy and comedy. Not your traditional poetry book. I have fond memories of poetry readings among friends on the DC metro commuting from my boring government job.

Humorous and quixotic

The main poem, "Adventures on the Isle Of Adolescence" is the story of a mid-thirties woman who finds herself on a date with an 18 year old skater. A lush use of the english language coupled with a bawdy sense of humor make this an excellent read for anyone who can appreciate the comedy of modern living.
