Advanced Cartooning and Other Drawings

The best cartoonists must possess a very twisted view of the world. Kliban was such a person and it is easy to see that in these cartoons. My favorite is on page 5, where a man holding a sack containing a duck is telling a tourist on a bicycle, "I'm not from here. I don't know Diddley Squat." The joke is that he is standing next to a road sign that states, "Diddley Squat Next 3 Exits." Only a cartoonist would think of something like that. My second favorite is on page 55, the first caption has one clock and the text is "Alarm clock" The second caption contains two clocks and the text is "Two larm clocks." Using a combination of minimal structure in the drawings and simple text, Kliban is able to make a collection of jokes for the thinking person. He was a quality cartoonist and a significant intellect.
