Book Overview

"Enchanting . . . 24-carat fun " -- New York Times Book Review

The classic tale of a female Huck Finn, Peter Bogdanovich's film version of the book was nominated for four Academy Awards. Set in the darkest days of the Great Depression, this is the timeless story of an 11-year-old orphan's rollicking journey through the Deep South with a con man who just might be her father. Brimming with humor, pathos, and an irresistible narrative...

Excellent and complementary

Written in the style (and context) of Steinbeck, this book is excellent. The remarkable thing about the book, though, is that it is one of the few instances where you should read and see both the book and movie. If you liked the movie, the book provides more stories and adventures; if you liked the book, the movie brings the characters, setting, and geography to life. The book is very readable; in fact, I read all 300 pages in a day! I highly recommend this book; the movie only makes a very good story better.

PAPER MOON

This is an excellent book. Having long been a fan of the movie, what a joy to discover the book that started it all. Addie Pray is a hilarious and charming narrator and her adventures pulled me happily along. A real treat. For anyone who likes stories of sassy girls growing up.

Read This Charming Book! (If you can find it)...

I was excited when I found this book at a garage sale, as it's very hard to find. It is full of wit, charm, and intelligence, told through the eyes of a girl who is 12 years old, but going on 40.And what a treat for fans of the film "Paper Moon"! It's like getting to read an unmade movie sequel -- since the actions in the movie cover only the first 1/3 of the novel. You get to read the "further adventures" of these two charming grifters as they hook up with a broad range of characters in a very well evoked 1930's southern U.S.I tried to read this slowly because I didn't want the fun ride to end. If you find this at a garage sale, online auction, or the library, pick it up! You won't be disappointed.

My all-time favorite!

I can't believe this book is out of print! Although I enjoyed the movie when I saw it at the age of 12, it doesn't begin to do justice to the book, set in the deep South instead of the Midwest. How a man managed to capture the emotions and perspective of an preadolescent girl is simply amazing-reading it feels like you're sitting on the front porch, listening to your favorite eccentric aunt tell her life story. The down-home language and expressions had me rolling with laughter! This is a must-have if you can find it-when I lost my copy, I borrowed one from the library and photocopied the whole thing!

Addie Pray is a wonderful book about life in the Depression.

Addie Pray is the best book I have ever read! It's about Addie, a 12- year- old girl who travels around the South with her "could- be" father Moses Pray. Also made into a movie called Paper Moon with Tatum O'Neal, this is one book that is AS GOOD as the movie!!!
