This is a great book for when it was written -- you get started on how to play bridge, and also she teaches you some basic points on how to play a hand and how to defend a hand against a contract -- so you can actually sit down and play a game of bridge. The only problem with this book is that it is slightly outdated, and it would be nice if there was an updated bidding book for beginners, that actually taught the bidding system as it is today.
Excellent for the Beginner and the Seasoned Player

This would be a great textbook in bidding for the bridge beginner. I have played bridge for years, and found it to be an excellent resource. Until reading this book, most of my bridge training was "seat of the pants". This book is very structured and really helped me to put together all of the bidding nuances that I was unclear about.
Bridge by Audrey Grant, The Club Series: Bidding
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 24 years ago
I just started playing bridge in October of 1999 and The Club Series by Audrey Grant was recommended to me by an ACBL Bridge Teacher. In just six months I have become a confidnet bridge player, and I attribute my quick learning of bridge to this well written book that has easy to follow sequential lessons that include, guidelines for play, easy to follow summaries, practice activities, numerous exercises, and many explained examples. I was so impressed with the Club Series on Bidding that I have purchased Audrey Grant's Diamond and Heart Series on play of the hand and defense. If you want to learn to play bridge the correct way, at your own pace, and have fun while doing it, then this is the book for you. Audrey Grant is a five-star teacher and writer when it comes to bridge. I'm purchasing a second copy of the Club Series: Bidding for my new bridge partner. Purchase this book or the entire series and you will be a better bridge player sooner than you think possible.

A first-rate introductory book on bridge
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
For anybody who wants to learn how to play bridge, this book makes an excellent introduction. It's the first of a four-volume series on how to play bridge, each volume dealing with a specific part of the game. This volume deals with the all-important bidding phase; subsequent volumes deal with declarer play (The Diamond Series), defensive play (The Heart Series), and duplicate bridge (The Spade Series). It has been said that bidding is the most difficult part of the game to learn--and master. Audrey's systematic approach makes the learning process fun and interesting. You'll learn that each bid indicates a message that you are trying to relay to your partner, and that you and your partner must work together to utilize strenghs and build upon weaknesses of each hand.Audrey Grant's four-volume Introduction to Bridge series is the top choice of bridge instructors throughout North America. With that in mind, each volume is meant to be studied and absorbed, not just read. But--and here's my best general advice--don't take your bridge studies too seriously that you take away from the wonderful fun this game provides.I thoroughly recommend this book as a bridge primer. I'm sure that, once you get into it, you'll be interested enough in the game to purchase the remaining volumes in the series. Learn bridge--and don't forget to have fun.
