A Sound of Leaves

This is a simple and touching story in which Sylvie, a city child, spends her first week ever at the seashore with her family. She loves the beach and the trees that grow in their backyard, but her excitement and joy are dimmed by the scorn of some local children who think she's a slum kid. The way in which Sylvie comes to terms with such treatment makes this an encouraging and heartwarming story.

sweet kids book for ages 7-10

This is a great gift idea for any kid. It teaches about the prejudice that happens in the real world and how to deal with it. Sylivie learns to forgive "Clair" (whom she befriends while on vacation in the country) who, along with her fellow country friends, snubs her because they are well-off country kids while Sylvie is a poor city kid. Sylvie realizes with the help of her mom that Clair was just scared of her because she was a little different. Had Sylvie brought Clair to the city for a visit, Sylive's city friends might be wary of Clair because she's a country kid. In other words, Sylvie learns she isn't perfect either, so she gives her friendship with Clair another try. This is a great book to read to your child if you want them to learn how to get along with everyone and learn that forgiveness is necessary if you don't want to be all alone. The illustrations are very good. I highly recommend school, daycare, and church librarians to purchase this book.
