Walter Barbe, well-known for his prescriptive reading skills checklists in the 60s adds footnotes to short poems. The illustrations are simple black and white (very suitable for classroom copying) and the tips for increasing children's reading and word-memory skills range from reading silently and drawing conclusions to wishes and dreams. If your classroom is doing "Poem in my pocket" or if you are of the Old School and insisting that kids learn how to memorize something besides phone-texting gibberish, this book will span K-8 and do a fine job at it.
Great for use in the classroom

I have been using this book for about a month. I plan to purchase it. Right now I am using the one from the public library. It has wonderful poems! Please give it a try.
