Addictive and Funny

Absolutely wonderful and highly recommended. Hemingway is hilarious in parts of this. Don't plan on doing much else once you start reading it. You will be hooked!

Read it before your next trip to Paris

We did a walking tour of "Hemingway's Paris." I read A Moveable Feast: The Restored Edition afterwards and wished I had read it before. However, it gives us a reason to go back! The restored edition contains essay not included in the first edition, which were some of my favorite.

Fabulous reading.

My favorite Hemingway work to date. It's haunting, beautiful, spartan, and addicting. "A Moveable Feast" is one of those books that you keep on your bedside nightstand for when you can't sleep at night. It's a book you keep in your pocket or your bag for when you're traveling and in an unfamiliar place. As close as Hemingway gets to autobiography - and it's heartbreaking, gratifying, and complex all at once. Don't miss this one. It's like finding an old friend again.

Two orders of Cafe Creme in Paris with Hemingway

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. After this novel, I would do anything to be able to have a coffee with Hemingway and his expatriates at the Closerie de Lillas cafe. The most astounding part is that this novel is TRUTH, maybe colored with nostalgia but are amazingly touching portraits of some of the greatest literary giants of the century. When I put the novel down, I felt like I KNEW Hemingway. There were so many times he would make me laugh out loud or sigh with regret! I've read a great deal of his more reknown novels, but this novel is tied for my favorite novel of his along with Farewell to Arms. It's inconcievable that such extraordinarily talented people collected in a few Parisian cafes in a few years, and they were all acquaintences. What an idea! His stories of F.Scott Fitzgerald were especially illuminating and hilarious, but my favorites were: Ford Madox Ford & the Devil's Disciple, Birth of a New School ( especially funny ), With Pascin at the Dome, & Ezra Pound and the Bel Esprit. Hemingway's wit and sarcasm are so real, they leap off the pages and he seems to be engaging you in conversation. This novel really opened up my eyes to my perspective of Hemingway, most of his novels are stories that are semi-autobiographical so we have to decipher truth from plot. There is no need to figure out what is Hemingway--because it is ALL Hemingway!

Five words you never want to hear in a comparative lit class?

"Yeah, going off of that..."

Which, when translated to normal human speak, actually means "This in no way relates to the point you just made, but I really love to hear myself talk." Every English major knows the scenario: The class circles up after reading (or not reading) a beautifully crafted piece of literature, and an intellectually-indulged twenty-something decides to hijack the discussion with the deluded idea that they have the book completely figured out. But the thing about great literature is that no one has managed to totally figure it out – that's why it stands apart as a selection of work that we all keep coming back to. Plus nothing kills an engaging class discussion quite like an unchecked know-it-all. Whether you're the type of student who's read the book before it was assigned, or who only highlights quotes they find on sparknotes, these ten works of literature are worth a second (or third) read. And here's a plus; two of them are comic books.
