Book Overview

Maguire urges that Christianity's real relevance for the renewal of American public life lies not in the myopic morality of the Christian Right nor in any particular program of the Left but in the enduring relevance of Jesus and biblical Christianity. He explains Christianity's indispensable moral conviction about God's care, rapport with the earth, the nature of ownership, the bond between justice and peace, the nature of enmity, the illogic of militarism,...

Great positive book

Within the church when one begins to talk about the prophets it tends to become a very law oriented kind of discussion. This book was the exception to that rule. These chapters made the book hard to put down. ... "When Freedom is a Virtue"; "Hope versus the Cringe"; "Exploring Love"; and "Song of Joy". It was positive and upbeat, a joy to read and fits well into my thinking about Progressive Christianity. It was about creating a world were interpersonal values and ethcis point to a fuller more complete life.

Turning Christianity on its' head

In A Moral Creed for All Christians, author Daniel C. Maguire is turning Christianity on its' head in his plea for a return to the original faith of the community of Jesus. Maguire presents a powerful indictment on present day Christianity and how the influence of succeeding world empires has helped to suppress and distort the original teachings of Christ. The Christian community could very well be ready for Maguire's prophetic "A Moral Creed" when one considers the alarming turmoil in the world today with no end in sight, and the pressing need for the Church to recognize the signs of the times in the 21st Century. In fighting terrorism with terrorism, America is only creating more terrorism as it refuses to recognize the root causes of terrorism. After 2000 years, possibly Christianity is ready to awaken to the fact that there is no other way to world peace than through the original teachings of Christ. Possibly, Christianity is ready to recognize the oppressive and unjust nature of global corporate capitalism and its' overseer American Empire. Possible, the Catholic Church is ready to dissect from its own body the cancerous tumor of ambitions of Empire. In this regard, Catholic theologian Daniel C. Maguire authors a very timely book and his thesis is reinforced with many quotations and interpretations of Scripture.
