A MATTER OF HAPPINESS by Tori Whitaker Two fiercely independent women are determined to live life by their own terms. Set in the 1920s and 2018, this story highlights the struggles women have faced (and continue to face) to gain the means to achieve their dreams and aspirations. As serious as that topic is, this story also incorporates the Jazz Age, Prohibition, the rising automobile industry in Detroit, classic cars, and info about the bourbon industry. A lot of information was packed into these pages. I loved both Melanie and Violet. However, Violet was a standout for me. She didn’t let the opinions of others influence her decisions, but she also had her heart in the right place. Also, the love she had for her red Jordan MX Playboy (the first car marketed for women) was something I can definitely relate to. Despite the repetitiveness of the term “modern woman” and feeling a bit too “preachy” at times, this was a solid, well researched story of love, sacrifice, family and what it means to be independent.
