A Hidden Cause of Murder

This is a solid, well done contemporary mystery that is surely worth a few hours of your time. All the characters, suspects, and police are well drawn, and though a bit short, the writing is flawless. Plus, some nice insights into a small modern medical practice, not to mention interesting family relationships. The solution may be a tad far fetched, but still it's an excellent job in a fine series, by Dr Roe, a retired medical man.

When Dr. Jean Montrose's partner is killed in the clinic office, at least one policeman thinks Dr. Montrose had motive and opportunity to be the culprit--especially since she is the one who discovered the body. However, the doctor is not the only person with a motive and she gets involved in discovering who the guilty party might be. This is not my favorite title in the series, but it is well crafted and plays fair with the reader. The series attempts to flesh out the characters with family relationships (Dr. Montrose has a husband and two young adult daughters), friendships, and reoccurring characters such as the medical examiner and the police officials. The mysteries occur in Perth, Scotland and environs although there is not as much about Scottish countryside and life as I would desire.
