A Daughter of Two Mothers

This is the (true) story of a girl that was raised like a princess in material wealth, but in an emotional somewhat doubtful atmosphere. When she finds out by chance that she is an adopted child, she is torn between the wish to know who her biological parents are and the dread to perhaps find out something quite pejorative about her birth family. On the other side there is the fight over the girl between a rich, spoiled and thoroughly unhappy woman who is unable to have children of her own, and who paid an enormous sum to dishonest people that brought her the baby girl - and a poor widow from the countryside who was forced to leave her beloved baby daughter with an acquainted family for the time of her treatment in hospital, just to find out after recovering that her baby daughter is gone, given away "for her own best". The story is set in pre-war Hungary in a Jewish environment, just about the time of Hitler's rise to power, which adds a second level to the very moving chain of events.

An excellent, well written book. Miriam Cohen draws her readers in with a story that makes that pages come alive. I read the book in two days as I was so caught up with the characters and the drama of Leichu. I am currently reading Cohen's book, "Behind The Walls" and I am enjoying it just as much. I gladly recommend "A Daughter of Two Mothers."
