Helen Brooks had me crying almost from the beginning of this book, I thought Candy Grey was truly a sweet lovable woman, but she had been hurt both in her body and her heart. The man she was going to marry only became engaged to her because she was Xavier Grey's niece, and he played around with other women, until one of them got pregnant, and he told Candy her uncle Xavier could easily pay off the woman and they would be cool. In the argument that continued, Harper swerved off the road to miss a jackknifed lorry (truck) but because they were in a heated argument at the time Harper reacted too late. Candy felt she would never trust another man other than Xavier again. Quinn Ellington another wounded soul, had to watch his infant son die when his loony wife stole little Joe and ran away, only to miss her turn and end up drowning both herself and the baby, who died later in hospital. So these two wounded souls find each other, and Quinn is the first to fall, but he refuses to admit he is caught, hook-line-and sinker. Candy finds she is in love with Quinn, but she knows he won't thank her for falling in love with him. So they both tiptoe around until Quinn first suggests that Candy pretend she is his girlfriend, until at a party a friend of Quinns makes a suggestion to switch partners, and Quinn pulls out all stops, he announced he and Candy are about to get married. That is when the fun starts. So again the people who deserved happiness find each other. Awww.
A Convenient Proposal by Helen Brooks

I enjoyed this story - didn't find it boring or dry at all. Part of the Rules of Engagement series. Description from the book back cover: Candy Grey was instantly wary when Quinn Ellington suggested it would be mutually beneficial for them to marry. She knew her uncle had asked Quinn, his best friend, to look after her while she recovered from a terrible accident ... but wasn't marriage taking it a bit far? Quinn claimed he needed a wife, but he didn't strike Candy as a man who needed anyone. Many women had tried to get him to the altar ... what really lay behind his proposal? Rules of Engagement: With this ring, will they wed?
