get children inspired to become engineers and scientists

This book -- one in a series -- is great. It explains a very "here and now" aspect of science that will excite children and teens, and show them that if they want to make a positive contribution to the world, they should become an engineer or a scientist. Even if they don't pick up on the career opportunities, it will inform them about important issues facing tomorrow's world.
