Struggle for Survival

This book is about a black family trying to survive in South Africa in the 1960's. There nieghbors are being forced to leave and they could be next. For Kathy the youngest in the family she watches her mom go to work everyday and try to pay the bills. Kathy is usealy home with her grandma and uncle Reggie who spoil her. This is a great book and give it four stars because it teaches you good lessons.

South African classic

I found this to be a very moving unsentimental account of a child's life in South Africa during the turbulent years of apartheid. Case is able to write with incredible warmth but avoids sentimentality. A must for anybody wanting insights into a young girl's development at that time. Case is able to describe the emotions and feelings of an eleven year old girl as though she were that girl and not an adult writer observing. I consider this to be a rare find - a South African gem.
