Since the middle of the eighteenth century the discipline now known as criminology has endeavoured to produce ideas which will deepen our understanding of crime. It has also, as a consequence of these ideas, tried to influence the methods of social control utilised by the criminal justice system in order to reduce crime. I will be looking at the 'labelling', 'critical', and 'security and risk' perspectives.
