I was assigned to read this book for a middle-level curriculum/theory class I'm taking, and I've already used it so much that my nearly-brand-new copy is severely dog-eared! Cynthia Mee (an educator at National-Louis University) conducted this study in the late 80s, so some of the answers to questions she asked are a little dated, but on the whole, the answers synch with what middle school aged students would say today! Ms. Mee came to our class last week and talked about this book with us, and we asked her if she was going to do a follow-up. She said that she won't be writing a follow-up, but that she's been documenting middle-level students' lives on camera for a few years now, creating a few different documentaries and seeing where it takes her. We were stunned by her account of how students were affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and that she was able to videotape some of them telling their stories... wow! I'd buy that documentary. I love the way this book is organized and written. It is clear, direct and honest while also being hopeful and optimistic. All in all, it is a fantastic resource for both teachers and parents.
