Ren e Roth-Hano was born in Mulhouse, Alsace, France and moved to Paris in 1940, the year of the defeat of France by German armed forces. As life became more and more oppressive under Nazi rule, she fled to Flers, Normandy where she and her sisters resided with Catholic nuns. The family reunited after France's liberation in 1944.
