VERY USEFUL PROJECTS

I used two of the Projects immediately. As a new user of SQL, my understanding has been greatly enhanced by reviewing the theory and then seeing it applied in a project.I hope other authors follow the format of this book.

Good book, but does have a few errors.

I tend to agree with others about the examples in the text book. One minute you are reading along about the subject and you never know that you should be actually performing what you were reading. It is not as clear as I have seen in other hands-on books. The book is okay and I am not disappointed that I bought it. I am a novice SQL 7 user and the book has helped me out. As for the errors, I have not been able to find an errata for the book. However, with the errors I have found, I have been able to correct them myself after strong determination.

If you're ready to learn...

Okay, here's the bottom line: you cannot avoid learning a good deal about SQL Server 7 if you will work through the 10 projects in this book. Until this book, I had tried all the usual, dry books that gave me facts (read "whitepaper") about SQL Server 7. Plus I had opened SQL Server 7 and looked at it. (As you've guessed I'm new with the product.) But until I got deep into Project 5 in the book and got to use DTS to pull together data from an Excel database, text file, and Access DB, I was really clueless about this new (in SQL Server 7), technology called Data Tranformation Services. The book was a huge help to me, and if you too are looking for an entry point into SQL Server 7, it should help you, too.

A fantastic hands-on approach to SQL Server 7.0

I would give this book 6 stars. I love books that educate by using real world projects. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn SQL 7.0 (intermediate, not for beginners), and make it immediately useful. I would recommend this book after reading Teach Yourself SQL Server 7.0 in 21 days by Richard Waymire and Rick Sawtell (SAMS). The perfect combination.
