Book to Movie: The Snowman and Wonderstruck

Today two very different books are released in their movie form.

The Snowman

Fans of Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø have probably shuddered at the terrifying thriller, The Snowman, being brought to life on screen. It’s definitely not a novel to be read alone at night.

In this seventh book in the series, Detective Harry Hole investigates the disappearance of a woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman. And if you’re worried about how a favorite will be transferred to screen, we’re in safe hands with the director, Tomas Alfredson. Not only is Tomas Scandinavian, he directed the movie adaptations of both Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Let the Right One In.

Wonderstruck

Switching thriller for emotional searching we have Wonderstruck. It’s the story of two children searching for who they are. Sounds normal, except Rose lives in the 1920s and Ben in the 1970s. In the book, their parallel stories are told differently, with Ben using pictures. The trailer shows both times having excellent images showing the eras, from the brown and gold striped t-shirts that every '70s boy seemed to have to the ornate New York museums in the '20s.

Brian Selznick wrote both the original book and the screenplay. This is looking like something you can even take your non-bookish friends to see.
