Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award(R) for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. Both are published in English by VIZ Media.

Shonen Manga
Both boys and girls will enjoy the titles in this genre, though the primary readership targets tween or teen boys. There is a boy protagonist at the heart of the plot who is often characterized as being a skilled fighter and having a comedic personality. These characters face off against strong rivals or evil villains who oppose the young fighter's path toward greatness. Popular titles include:
- Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama
- Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba
- Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto
- Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
Shoujo Manga
The stories in this genre are aimed at tween and teen girls, as there are romance-centered stories with classic girly elements of princes, bad boys, and hopelessly romantic love triangles. The schoolgirls who turn into superheroes keep readers engaged, as the protagonist is often making a journey toward a specific goal but faces shenanigans and conflicts along the way. Some of the most popular titles include:
Kodomuke Manga
Manga doesn't leave out younger minds and beginner or intermediate readers, as the kodomuke division is geared toward middle school-aged children. Younger children may already be familiar with the titles such as Pokemon or Yo-Kai Watch, but there are many more titles that focus on a character's journey through friendship, physical strength, and challenges. Popular titles for young readers include:
- Pokemon Adventures by Hidenori Kusaka
- Manga Warriors Series by Erin Hunter and Dan Jolley
- The Legend of Zelda by Akira Himekawa
Seinen and Josei Manga
There are two additional categories of manga: seinen and josei manga. You can also find these manage books for sale at ThriftBooks, though titles in these genres are directed toward young adults. Seinen targets adult men ages 18 and over, while josei is written for women ages 18 or over. The materials in these categories are more mature, particularly in areas of violence and sexual content. Plots and characters tend to take on a darker tone in seinen titles with adult language, graphic violence, and sexual situations, while themes and content in josei titles are similar to what is found in American adult romance novels. Popular titles include:
