Born in Miami in 1956, Patricia Carroll Daniels, better known as Patricia Cornwell, grew up in North Carolina and earned her B.A. in English from Davidson College. After college, she worked as a reporter, covering crime in Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked as a technical writer and later as a computer analyst in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia. Written while she was working in the Medical Examiner's office, her first novel, Postmortem, earned her the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards as well as the French Prix du Roman d'Aventure prize. Cornwell's novels featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta have won her the Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author, the Gold Dagger Award, and the Medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. Her dozens of bestselling books have sold over 100 million copies in thirty-six languages in over 120 countries. Cornwell now lives in Boston.
