Elmore Leonard Profile Picture

Elmore John Leonard, Jr., born in New Orleans in 1925, moved to Detroit as a child and lived there for most of his life. Better known as novelist and screenwriter Elmore Leonard, he joined the Navy after graduating from high school and served in the South Pacific. Returning from service, he enrolled in the University of Detroit and worked as an advertising copywriter. At the same time, Leonard more actively pursued writing, an interest of his since childhood. The Western Writers of America chose his novel Hombre as one of the best westerns of all time in 1961, and Leonard quit advertising to become a full-time writer. Leonard switched from westerns to crime novels, earning numerous awards including the Edgar, National Book Award Medal for Distinguished Contributions and the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award. Twenty-six of his bestselling books and stories have become popular films and television shows, including Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Jackie Brown (based on the novel Rum Punch), Hombre, and 3:10 to Yuma. The television series Justified is based on a popular Leonard character. Leonard died in 2013.
