Elizabeth George Speare is one of a handful of children's authors to win two Newbery Medals. She was also honored with a Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for her distinguished and enduring contribution to children's literature. Born in 1908 in Melrose, Massachusetts, Speare completed her B.A. at Smith College and earned an M.A. in English from Boston University. She taught English at several private Massachusetts high schools, and retired from teaching to raise her family. Speare began by writing articles and her first book, Calico Captive, was published in 1957. The Witch of Blackbird Pond, finished the next year, was the first of her Newbery Medal winners. Her third book, The Bronze Bow, brought her second Newbery Medal. With The Sign of the Beaver, Speare won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction and the Christopher Award. She died in 1994.
