Carl Hiaasen is a columnist, reporter, and novelist. Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1953, he attended Emory University before transferring to the University of Florida from which he graduated with a degree in journalism. He has worked for newspapers ever since, two years for Cocoa Today and as a columnist and reporter at the Miami Herald since 1976. Hiaasen co-wrote his first three mystery thrillers with fellow journalist William D. Montalbano. Tourist Season, the first novel he wrote on his own, was published in 1986. His first children's book was Hoot, which won the 2002 Newberry Medal and was made into a film. Hiaasen discovered and helped bring the young adult novel Eragon to public attention. Hiaasen has received numerous awards for journalism and commentary, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. In addition to his bestselling novels, Hiaasen has published two collections of his newspaper columns, children's books, and a nonfiction account about golf. His novel Strip Tease was made into a movie starring Demi Moore in 1996. Hiaasen lives in Florida.
